Understanding morality....and avoiding hypocrisy...

UPDATE :  Workers Party has sacked Yaw Shin Leong. You can deduce from the statement released by WP what their concerns are:

"WP believes strongly in transparency and accountability, and expects no less from our party members, especially our Members of Parliament."

By continuing not to account to the Party and the people,...." - Sylvia Lim

By failing to come clean and apologize, Yaw puts his party at risk as the WP had campaign for a 1st World parliament, govt transparency and accountability.  Some of you pointed out his alleged misconduct was more serious because they involved married women with families.  In times like that people think in terms of black and white ...absolute good or evil. WP' acknowledged the contributions of Yaw and his work for the people of Aljunied.

A number of scandals have broken out and started to consumed the attention of the public and netizens. The tabloid has fed the masses with exciting stories to fuel their interest and encourage them to pass judgement on those who have erred. I want to start this article with some wisdom from the Bible:

"Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone" -  John 7:53-8:11 [Link]

That was what Jesus said when a woman who committed adultery was brought to him and a self righteous mob wanted to stone her. Whether you're a Christian or not there is immense wisdom in this Bible passage for us on how we should treat those who have fallen short morally. The tabloids supply the juice and in some ways encourage us to do the equivalent of modern day stoning - condemnation by the media, public and the Internet.

Yaw Saw Leong has resigned from WP CEC I will not repeat rumours surrounding Yaw Shin Leong but take this opportunity to address some of the issues that emerge from this episode. In an earlier posting "Scandal January in Singapore", there were comments discussing whether voters and the general public should accept such moral failings of those in public office or civil service.

Suppose today a big announcement is made just like the one that was made on Saturday involving something illegal. Police announce that they have monitored Internet use in Singapore and have requested for a list of users who are civil servants from the ISP that have been visiting very deviant pornography regularly on the Internet. At the same time a list of people list of people is obtained by reporters of govt employees, teachers, doctors, bank employees, lawyers who frequent our casinos more than 3 times a week. Lets say the civil service decide to put telephone taps on the lines of all employees to see who are betting illegally, having illicit affairs, doing ...say they monitor Internet use to find out who uses it to do personal stuff like trading stocks (since it is stock market is open only during office hours so civil servants cannot invest?), dating service, MSN chat, online shopping etc  ..throw in a little more detective work to find out who are the ones who are drinkers who get drunk often at pubs, bars and KTV, find out who is gay and violated 377A...check their bank accounts to find out who the overspending shopaholics are...  hmm maybe I miss out 1 or 2 things but the idea is to build a list of people with "flaws".

After the whole exercise, you will have a rather big list maybe 20-30% of  people will be on this list. Now you correlate this list with the performance of these people relative to others...what do you think you will find? Most likely you'll find that the 2 things are independent because these so-called "flaws" that people like to believe are defects in human character are an integral part of human nature...rather than flaws they are part and parcel of being human- the other 70% of the people you think are 'perfect' have issues you cannot fall out of your detection system or have hidden it from you. The ordinary guy will have one or more of these traits ...he may demonstrate strongly one of these traits or his issue may be spread over a number of them.

Before I give you the more stunning examples. Lets warm up with a few smaller ones.  Renown physicists Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman were womanizers - in fact Feynman wrote openly about his appreciation of women and how to pick them up. Famous economist Keynes was gay and is believed to had procured to satisfy his needs. Famous computer scientist, Alan Turing was convicted of indecency[Link]. Newton was a sexual puritan but lost a fortune trading the stock market. Winston Churchill lost a fortune at the stock market and often drank too much. Before I explain how I think such issues should be handled by political parties, civil service and society....lets go through more examples....

What do ex-President Clinton, his vice president Nobel Prize winner Al Gore and  Newt Gingrich have in common? They all committed infidelity....and had extremely good performance in public service.  Perhaps the most stunning example FDR, whom many consider the greatest American president in the 20th century - historians have found out that he kept not 1 but 2 mistresses[Link]. Because it was morally unacceptable,  he was forced to keep it a secret.

The public response to Saturday's events which I saw on the news is to demand that we monitor civil servants closer, check on their bankground more closely to look for clues and if they ever falter, "sack them on the spot". ...and some said it with air of moral superiority. But going after people's private lives can be counter productive -you put in a mountain of effort but you can never get rid of the human weakness of people you hire and most of it has nothing to do with job performance. .  A zero-tolerance for certain human flaws simply encourages people to hide their problems until they get bigger until it transform into an illegal activity. You get better people not by insisting they behave perfectly but to step forward and come clean with whatever problems without major impact to their careers so long as they stay well within the bounds of what is legal, do not hurt others and undergo rehabilitation.

How should the public treat scandals surrounding political figures? Should we always demand they step down? For scandals involving corruption, they have to be prosecuted because they betrayed the public trust and did something illegal. However,  if the politician is found to have a mistress, what happens? There is no black or white when it comes to such indiscretions. Former French president Mitterand had a mistress, Anne Pingeot. In the past, when these things are found out in Singapore, it is believed that they were asked to step down quietly and very often the public does not hear about it. In places where the society is conservative (or pretends to be conservative), the public will demand the politician step down. There is a danger to this because it encourages politicians to dig out dirt to destroy their opponents and because many politicians are not morally perfect, such scandals become regular affairs, tabloids sensationalise and over time causes great damage  to the society as trust for leadership erodes.

Across the causeway, several politicians became embroiled scandals including one repeat allegation that Anwar is gay. If you look at these cases closely, they are likely to involve  political enemies digging dirt on the private lives of their opponents. I spoke to a few Malaysian friends and most of them don't care if Anwar is gay but their main concern is corruption and the motives of those behind hiring private investigators to spy on opponents  - do they want power for some other purpose far more sinister than a politician having a mistress?

In Singapore, so far it doesn't look like sex scandals have not been used by politicians from either side to bring each other down - scandals have emerged from rumour mills formed from normal human networks. We don't get CDs of scandalous liaisons sent to us by mysterious sources recorded from hidden cameras. However, I can think of one case involving Francis Seow in the 80s. During the 1988 General Elections, Eunos  GRC  was closely fought and the campaigning was heated. Half way through the campaigning, some details surrounding Francis Seow's  private life
was circulated - his team lost but secured 49.11% of the votes. Francis Seow said in a recent video that state intelligence resources was used to spy on him and record his conversations with his girlfriend(girlfriends?) and so on. Almost half the people in Eunos GRC didn't care and voted for the opposition anyway - you have to remember it is asymmetric only one side had the resources to check on the other.

We are all tempted to take the moral high ground when such such scandals occur. The more shocked you are or try to pretend to be, the more you feel this air of moral superiority but we forget we have all sinned and fallen short at some point in our life. There are many things leaders can do that are far more harmful than having a mistress - they can start wars, build casinos, ruin the economy and implement bad policies that hurt  the people. Lets not be so fixated with these scandals and make the people embroiled in them go through hell when they have already suffered enough pain from their own failings.

Doesn't matter moral or not moral, or whatever lah, as long as majority voters think these people are the best available ones to vote for, that's what really matters.

This applies also to opposition politicians.

So extra marital affair or not, if Yaw Shin Leong contest and win in GE 2016 again, that's what really matters.

Most important is 60% say OK and the party will form the govt.

40% of votes = 6 seats.
80% of votes = 12 seats.

There will be no freak election results because of Gerrymandering.

The Party Against People does not need 60%.
So please tell your political masters to relax.
Last time I checked, Geylang is still legal.

I can quote the Bible too: Thou shall not commit adultery.
You say that " the more you feel this air of moral superiority but we forget we have all sinned and fallen short at some point in our life." Really? Therefore a politician or civil servant can stay in office and keep mum when they get caught for a "sin"?

"There are many things leaders can do that are far more harmful than having a mistress - they can start wars, build casinos, ruin the economy and implement bad policies that hurt the people."
Likewise, there are many ways a blog can be far more harmful than senseless writings- they can encase innuendos, lame rhetoric, and advise normalisation of scandals.

The commentators are not taking a higher moral ground. They are questioning the silence, lack of accountability. Or do I understand that perhaps you endorse adultery so long as the politician can "run" good policies?

In psychology, the tendency to see people in such all-encompassing terms is called the "halo effect".

It's difficult for people to understand how an adulterer, gambler, and persons with serious personal failings could be an excellent politician.

The thing is performance and personal lives are often separate...just like in India people think the actors are the same as characters they portray in the movies. I guess it takes time for people to understand as see.

Michael Jordan once had a gambling problem..still was the best basket ball player in the world ...Tiger Woods has women problems when he was no. 1 golfer in the world.

I'm a university graduate, struggling with my life, having difficulties in getting a job, because of the economic situation. I won't be bother if the government leaders have mistresses (as long as they're not corrupt) as long as they can run the country well. Those things inside the bedroom, let them settle those stuff with their wives, gfs, mistresses.

In ancient China, those emperors had 1000s of women, yet this didn't deter them from running the country.

Till now, can't understand what's the big deal about what happened between Bill Clinton and Monica Levinsky and the incident between Eisen Chan and his girlfriends.

"I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother. You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship. Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man in the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church. I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus. Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.
Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us." 1 Corinthians 5:1-7

There is a distinction between morality and the law.

Prostitution is morally wrong in most cultures and religions.
Prostitution is also morally wrong to most Singaporeans.

BUT prostitution is LEGAL in Singapore.

And the lawyers can correct me if I am wrong; Under Singapore laws;
If a prostitute solicits for sex, it is illegal.
If a customer solicits for sex, it is legal.

There is also a legal age below which a person cannot work as a prostitute. Not sure if it's 18 or 21.

So the principal, government scholars, civil servants who are being called up for questioning.

They may or may not have committed an illegal act.
Let's give them the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Hi ET,

If you reside in Hougang ward, you are free to exercise your voting rights come 2016 based on whatever criteria you base your vote on, be it the candidate's marriage fidelity, shirt colour, competence in discharging municipal duties, toilet flushing habits, hair style, the car he/she drives, and so on.

If you do not reside in Hougang then it is none of your business really haha.

Lucky Tan said...

anon 13:15,

I just want to clarify that I not say any of the incidents, infidelity, keeping mistresses, visiting prostitutes, gambling, getting drunk etc is morally correct. In fact people are not incorrect to view these as morally wrong and people who committed them also know it is morally wrong.

It is good that you point out morally wrong is not the same as illegal. My posting is about how one should view a person who did something morally wrong but hurt only his loved ones but has nothing to do with the public.

Of course we prefer someone who is scandal free and has excellent performance but we should not let such private matters overwhelm our assessment.

Dear Lucky @ 14/2/12 13:27
Thanks for your response.

Given the sad state that S'pore is in.
As long as a leader is not doing anything illegal.
I can accept his moral shortcomings.

I'd rather have an immoral but competent leader who has not broken any laws;
Than a moral but incompetent leader who is law abiding.

Anonymous said...

Hi Lucky, the people you listed with 'character flaws' will invite one retort - these people are westerners and Asian don't tolerate 'immoral' leaders. I don't agree with such argument though because who sets the moral standards?
Is it a sin if a wedded couple do not 'go forth and multiply'? Is it 不孝, if 无后? Public servants must be married with children before being considered for higher posts? If they don't spend enough time with families they failed in parenting and therefore must be sacked? Should there be a criteria for public servants or MP to have served at least two years in a monastery or similar institute? Where do we draw the line?
I can agree that political leaders should come clean with their moral failings. Voters have every right to exercise their judgement at the polling stations base on whatever criteria they fancy. Beyond that, when it comes to moral issues, 'let the man who have not sinned cast the first stone'.

Anonymous said...

No human being is infallible. No matter how much a high salary you try to pay him for being "virtuous".

Let's face it..we pay our leaders for their competency and performance on the governance job. Nothing more.
People should have a realistic view and expectations of public figures.

Unless we want to go down to the path of Indonesia..good luck to finding people who wants to serve.

One last distinction about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski.

Bill Clinton was threatened with impeachment because of LYING about his relationship with Monica Lewinski.
And NOT because he engaged in sexual activity with Monica Lewinski.

It's ok to be immoral.
Just don't do anything illegal.
And don't lie about it.

We should not allow ourselves to be confused with professional capabilities with personal failings. But I think there could be situation where personal failings will in one way or another affect professional judgements. Only the parties involved knows best themselves.

I have been wanting to blog about it for a long time. Glad you brought it up and I agree wholeheartedly with you.

I don't know why the angst about YSL. It's his private life and so he made a mistake. Everyone fails at some point in his life.

Is he doing anything illegal? No. Did his MP responsibility entail being morally upright? No. Why the witch hunt?

The two high-level civil officers were not suspended because of their affairs with the lady in mention but rather if there were contractual favours because of the relationship. For a school principal in previous news, he has to be 'morally upright' because of the close proximity of his job to young kids and teens. Parents and kids have to feel 'safe'.

So I have no idea what the din about YSL and his confession. He doesn't need to confess anything. The only thing he need to do is ask for forgiveness from his loved ones and family.

Whether YSL did that is none of my business. Or yours either.

Chilling out,

Singaporeans are by and large not politically saavy. This is probably due to the predominance of single party politics for a very very long time resulting in a lack of good exposure of alternative political views.

Hence, Singaporeans have difficulty differentiating between sexual indiscretion and political integrity and often lump them together. Examples of such argument include 'If he cheats on his wife now, he would one day cheat the electorate'.

The failure to see the independence of sexual infidelity and political integrity is testament to Singaporeans' poor political 'IQ'. I guess this will take time to develop.

It depends if you feel political integrity is separate from personal infidelity?

If a man who cannot keep his vows to his wife, and presumably have to lie about his trespassing (cover up etc) , while teaching or preaching to our & his children about ethics, doing right from wrong etc what kind of integrity do you think this leader has? Are these characters so separable that you can categorically say that what he does in his personal capacity (moral lapses) will not spill over to his professional capacity one day? In the case of the Principal, it could start with he paying for sex, but what if it went further and include students favors? Or the SCDF/CNB tendering case that involved biased favoritism? One goes down the slippery slope from there.

On the other hand, a high moral parsimony is likely to render moral frameworks simplistic and leave us unable to deal with the complexity of real circumstances and acts. So on balance, it should be an indicative of moral consistency when we evaluate situations like these.

When 2011 election was over, the PM was very quick in issuing its Code of Conduct for his Party. I think he should include one more section on Sexual Behavior just to cover his base.

After all, they demand pte-sector-equivalent million dollars salaries for their talents, integrity and respect, then they would better walk the talk. As a major party holding 93% of the parliament seats and appointment of key civil servants and important positions, they also have the most resources and power to abuse and block information. So let them live up to the high standards.

Nature is amoral. Only man manufactures 'morality'. Because of religion.

Then religion manufactures marriage where a man and a woman are chained to each other by law. People marry because of law not because of love.

Why should the judge be involved in the private matters between a man and a woman? What has law got to do with love?

The society is cunning. It has made marriage so easy and divorce so difficult and expensive.

Prostitution, the age old profession, came about because of marriage. Men are polygamous beings. The establisment of marriage has created the establishment of prostitution and both are long establishment.

To remove prostitution and so-called illicit sex, adultery, affairs, Geylang, Keong Saik, Petain Road; you must first remove marriage.

So don't point figures at the men and women. They are being natural beings.

Ask a man if he has paid for sex and he'd tell you no. But ask him, of all his friends, how many of them does he know pay for sex and he'll tell otherwise.

Men, Singapore men, are well known to Hap Chai, Lion City Hotel Johor Bahru, Batam, Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Batu and Tanjung Babi.

Let alone, Bangkok and Angeles City, Phillipines.

Singapore men have been paying for sex for years to the point that it was fairly recently that we have a law that prohibits underage sex overseas.

Had those people had paid for sex in Geylang or overseas, would the government had made a big issue of it? The government collects taxes from Geylang. Why the double standards?

That's hypocrisy when you can't get a slice of the pie.

Is the government suggesting that these men not internet sites but Geylang instead?

What exactly is the problem here?

And they got away with and they were not proscecuted. They just apologised and they're clean as a whistle and their sins are forgiven.

Celibacy is anti-nature. No man is a celibate.

One should not talk about trust and trusting the government and all and close one eye to Geylang. That's double standard.

Do you have less trust in PAP because they established 15 lorongs of brothels in Geylang? Do you trust PAP more for establishing and sustaining the existences of these 150 houses of whores in Geylang?

I wonder whether WP, especially YAW, would have the moral defiance to grill the gov on the sexual indiscretion of civil servants in parliament? They should oppose the Gov for deploring the loose morals of these PAP model leaders. They should help to raise the IQ level of our dimwitted Gov by suggesting that they treat sexual infidelity and civil integrity as separate issue.

WP,especially Yaw, should fight for the reinstatement of the school principal who were forced into early retirement because he committed what was humanly natural - from experience.

I want to comment on something called Decency.

I hope the Press/Media will spare some thoughts to the family of the "alleged perpetrator' here. It is their own and sole responsibilities, so is only fair you hold them accountable. However, there's no need to stake out at their private premises and intrude upon their family or children who are already widely affected, and if not, suffering. If one of your family members was the ones who committed a crime, surely you won't want to be trailed and judged. Every person has to face their own karma. So please use some common sense and apply sensitivity and courtesy to the people around them.

There is no casting of stones here but surely a distinction should be made between the following categories:

1) a faithful and loyal spouse/partner
2) one-time infidelity and
3) serial philanderer

It is inevitable that the 3 groups command different levels of respect from their peers and the public.

While (1) is admirable, (2) is human, (3) reveals an underlying character flaw.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Only a man's character is the real criterion of worth." And I agree.

It is easy to say let those that can perform do the job so long he does not break the law. But, these people are the ones writing the law. Civil servants such as principals are not CEOs of a public company, only concern with making money. In Singapore civil servants basically get a iron rice bowl. They do not get sack even when they do not perform as well. Is asking them to maintain a high moral standing too much to ask in return?

Your many examples such as Clinton etc, do not mean that they can justify their wrong doing just because they can 'perform'. They have a more important job... setting a good example for his people. If everyone follow their example, the world will become a chaotic place. These people should not take up such jobs if they know their own weaknesses.

Maybe the difference is that they did not "rule" in the age of the internet - how much did the common people at that time( bearing in mind percentage educated is smaller) know of these "facts"?

How much of the truth was obliterated by propaganda or covered up, how much was fear-driven respect and how much is true respect?

How many of us would respect someone with a known character flaw ? - Truly, a question that one could only answer or speak for oneself.

The stone has stumbled many. Unknowing to them, inscribed on the stone were crimson words. It is the sole possession of great power and authority with many lovers and servants. They were beholden to him and lived off his great riches. His mystical stone kept them under ranks and files. He had no tolerance who breaks an old covenant. One who has bitten into forbidden fruit should not be accusing another for biting the other fruit. By those words, the great power was pronounced dead.

They dropped the stone.

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man

Singaporeans are immature and daft. They are frogs in a well. This is my conclusion. Why? Because most of them accept an unaccountable and opaque government system for the last 46 years.

Imagine this scenario where you have to hire an employee and you must choose between 2 candidates.

A is highly educated and he demands high salary. From past employers you found out that he is un-motivated, arrogant, takes no initiative, never admits to mistake and certainly not well liked by co-workers.

B is a fairly good work, educated and willing to learn. But you found out that years ago he was jailed for embezzlement.

Surely you are weary of B and you know the risk involved. On the other hand, you can determine that A is going to screw your organization and hiring him is definitely a stupid decision.

You see what i mean? We have to weigh the pros and cons.

Does gambling destroy one's own family or another person's family?

Does getting drunk result in a cuckolded man?

Nope, they also need to settle with you (since it is your wife they slept with), and your father (since it is your father's wife i.e. your mom, that they slept with), and of course your son (since it is your son's wife i.e. your daughter-in-law that they slept with).

"In ancient China, those emperors had 1000s of women, yet this didn't deter them from running the country."

All these women were virgins, sourced from all over the country. They were not the wives of other men. Can I sleep with your wife, your father's wife, or your son's wife? Answer: Yes or no!

"Till now, can't understand what's the big deal about what happened between Bill Clinton and Monica Levinsky and the incident between Eisen Chan and his girlfriends."

I too can't understand what's the big deal. After all, Monica Lewinsky is not a married woman, no man has been made a cuckold and no one has been given a green hat.

But, I too cannot understand why you implicitly compare your own wife, your father's wife (your mom) and your son's wife (your daughter-in-law) to a prostitute or an unmarried mistress, as if cheating on you / your father / your son is the same as visiting a prositute!

Why do you regard / compare your own wife/mom/daughter-inlaw to a prostitute, indirectly?

You should be pissed like him(from 6am). If you are not, then woe to that community, the city, the nation and the world when people don't get pissed by a wrong committed at the expense of the community. Woe to the leaders who are not pissed with leaders who trespasses common values and the institution of justice and wrongful behavior.

And why shouldn't he be pissed? Not that he could have been the neighbor who was trespassed on. But because he cared. Even if he acted in his own interests by being in another's shoes, he should be highly commended because one day, he may save you from much pains.

You want to live in a community with neighbors who are pissed when another neighbor trespasses your property or vandalizes common properties. He could be the neighbor who watches, warned and sounded the alarm when your young children and elderly are in danger while you are not watching.

Everyone wish they have neighbors who get pissed at trespassers. Or neighbors who tell off litterbugs or rude service providers and customers. It shows that they cared and were sensitive.

Even better if they stand with you to fight off threats to the neighborhood or values you cared about.

But woe to the community, the nation and the world when neighbors are indifferent and closed a blind eye to wrongs and crimes against another neighbor. Woe to them when they shared no emotional connectivity with common values.

When your fellowmen say it is none of their business when it should have been their business to care, you could be certain one day your properties will be.....violated.

2) one-time infidelity and
3) serial philanderer

Does visiting prostitution constitute an infidelity? Or a philanderer, if visited on a regular basis?

Is it less serious when a husband use paid-for sex to satisfy his needs, than having say a long ongoing affair?

People do fall out of love, and marriages falling apart. In between some trying time, they meet someone else (married/single) and fall in genuine love. In such cases there is a transition period...do one label this person as having an affair or misconduct? Not every person get it right the first time. Others less tidy and neat..or through trial and errors. Cases like these are plentiful and happens all the time. You can't stop people from finding true love.

As such -- It is NOT a crime when people commit either of the above. Nobody has been jailed because of the above two..mostly it leads to divorces.

There are many grey areas and therefore no need for excessive rigidity or moral autism. As for respect, you really can't give it to anyone blindly until they are one leg in their coffin with confessions before you know for sure they have been deserving at all.

I find it amusing to read comments by 'Stone Age-d' Singaporean men (perhaps some women, horrors!) insinuating that a modern day Singaporean ADULT woman is a passive entity in this whole YSL affair. It is as if she (also an adulterer and many others like her, if the reports are correct) did not consent to this as well. Well, if they didn't then it constitutes RAPE and YSL can then be prosecuted.

All these male chauvinists here are arguing how women are to be 'protected' from adultery/rape just makes me laugh. As if married women do not cheat and have an IQ of a 5yo. Insulting and revolting. LOL

Singaporean men should learn to respect women as equals and not as children. Men cheat, so do women. We can handle ourselves. Thank you very much. Really.

Those who hold public office especially high positions must be held to a higher level of accountability, integrity and personal conduct. The reason is simple. These people are in positions of power and influence. Their decisions and actions affect the general public. The decisions and actions of a private lay person affect only those around them.
So I think it is right for the general public to know more about the personal lives of public figures. The media has an important role to play here. Unfortunately the MSM in Singapore has not done their job properly. They overplay those misbehaviour committed by the oppositions while completely blank out those committed by the ruling elites. I know of many sins committed pap ministers and mps and yet there is not even any hint in the Singapore MSM. Singaporeans deserve better treatment from the MSM.

Finding true love is noble but hurting others (including children) in the process is not!

Excessive rigidity or moral autism?

Rules or moral codes of conduct do not exist only at times when there are no temptations. They are precisely written for these "transition periods" or "grey areas of one's life" to remind us mere mortals of what is the right thing to do.

Of course infidelity is not a crime but it is morally wrong! More importantly, it reveals the true character of the man / woman beneath.

Tell me (in fact, show me) where on the job description of the MPs & Civil Servants say that sexual fidelity or abstinence is part of the requirements?

What happens in their bedroom for their personal pleasures however they choose to engage, with or without consent of their spouses is really their business. Unless as Lucky said, if you have all the carte-blance power, money and resources to squander and pry for personal or political gain (not to mention moral hypocrisy) why would their conjugal bliss have anything to do with you - the public?

I don't disagree that if there are outright corruption involved, that the law go charge them for criminal offences. Outside of that, is really none of my business.

Just because they are public figures, do you have the same moral requirements you expect from your Priest, Pastor, Monk, Celebrities idols etc and you feel you are entitled to know it all?

There are ethics and there are morals. Morals define personal character, while ethics stress a social system in which those morals are applied. In other words, ethics point to standards or codes of behavior expected by the group to which the individual belongs. So does this Party ethics translate to National Ethics too, and translate to Social ethics too? Or it more rightly belongs to your own Family ethics. What are we insisting on here? A set of guided Ethics or your Personal Subjective Morals that you wish to impose on?

And how come nobody is talking about the underaged girls that were being pimped on this island in the first place? So your morals dictate once again, that is NOT-ok when it comes to own people (closer proximity) but is OK if it's not our own people who have been victimized here?

Chauvinism as an excuse said...

Some bird-brain woman claimed that some men here are male chauvinists. OK, so let's give some analogy in term of women, for the benefit of such bird brains:

1. A married woman had paid sex with a gigolo. Who does she hurt?
Ans: Her own family (husband, kid etc)

2. A married woman has an affair with an unmarried man. Who does she hurt?
Ans: Her own family (husband, kid etc)

3. A married woman has an affair with a married man. Who does she hurt?
Ans: BOTH her husband AND another family's WIFE and another family's CHILDREN and another family's wife's parents etc.

So, can you now see the diff bet 1, 2 and 3? You cannot dismiss case 3 under the excuse of "male chauvinism" or the excuse of "private matter between husband and wife"!!! In case 3, another family other than your own family is being hurt. This other family is part of the public. It is a public matter.

To repeat: If accusation against Yaw is true, it is NOT just between he and his wife, something to be discussed behind their bedroom. It is a matter of public interest because members of the public, specifically, the man whom has been given a green hat, that cuckold man's parents, that man's children (if any) etc, have all been violated. Understand?

I do not think this is an unreasonable expectation. I did have high hopes for my MP but he has disappointed me by failing to meet the most basic requirement an MP should meet and that is to be professional and adhere to a code of good conduct. He knows that he should not have strayed but he decided to do it anyway so he should take responsibility and bear the consequences of his actions. I would not be finding excuses for him on his behalf. I am gkad he got the BOOT.

The WP has NOT let down the voters of hougang.
In fact, they have done well, and lived up to our expectations and more!

It is the MP Yaw who has let down the voters.

Supposed one day if PM Lee has a crooked apple in his team, is he going to say PAP has let down Singaporeans? Actually, in the 45 years of governance, can PAP REALLY hand to its heart, say none of his MP has EVER crossed that line?

Please see the forests before the trees.

Singapore men always have 150 brothel of PRC pussies to choose from in Geylang. But could we say the same for Singaporean women?

The fact of the matter is many SIngaporean men can't see that many Singaporean women out there are sexually frustrated.

Just look at how a typical singaporean woman dress on the streets.

Tight, figure hugging, ass-hugging, baring arms and shoulders, baring bra straps, tight jeans, shorts, midriff and singlet, etc.

Singapore women are sexually unsatisfied and sexually frustrated and singaporean men should learn to alleviate this.

Awww... that must have been the worst sweeping statement I have heard in my life! Japanese gals dress tartly and with body-hugging clothes too.

Are they sexually reprieved? i think you haven't lived in Japan, have you? They are among the most open-minded ones. They put some European people to embarrassment and shame.

Or either that you are just a jealous gal who can't dress like them. Give yourself a chance to dress up too. You'll be surprised it's not all about sex.

The dummies in white are screwing themselves by opening their mouths without thinking. As to the PM, if someone were to ask him point blank as to whether a certain MP had an affair and was divorced by his wife, Yes or No. He is dead meat. If yes, why did you not sack him. If No, he is putting his neck on the line and if the answer is Ldon't Know" that it will not surprise the people
